“Woody Woodpecker”
As a child, we had several woodpeckers in our backyard, as well as our neighbors. In my early marriage, my mother-in-law entered a woodcarving of a woodpecker in the Maryland State Fair and won a blue ribbon. I always liked it, but upon her passing, her daughter brought it to her house and put it in storage. That was 30 years ago. She recently passed away and her husband brought over some memoralia. And the woodcarving was in the box. I immediately put it on my mantle. I examined it and thought the black was too flat, so decided to do a painting of a woodpecker, using the woodcarving as my model. We’ve seen several woodpeckers this season and my husband has been taking pictures of them. This is a tribute to my mother-in-law, which brings back such memories of the woodpecker.
