Bica
Bica reimagines a photograph of my grandmother in 1985, four years before I was born. I sought to capture this candid moment with colors that feel both nostalgic and timeless. Set in Figueira da Foz, Portugal, the piece is titled after the famous espresso found in every cafe. The word "bica" is used interchangeably for both "espresso" and "fountain." My grandmother has been a fountain to our family, pouring beautifully into each subsequent generation. This piece became even more meaningful to me after my one year old daughter surprised me with marks of her own on its surface when it was near completion. As I worked to restore it, I left a few of her marks visible as a reminder of the impact we have on those coming after us.
