This is a twenty minute sketch of the model from a figure drawing session late last summer. I try to focus on the figure, but it’s hard to resist a quick portrait when I have the opportunity. I happened to be in just the right spot and the lighting on Chris’ face was ideal for what I had in mind.

I have used different media for these studies, from pencil to watercolor, but for the past few years I have been exploring a combination of PanPastels on toned Fabriano paper. Of course no photos are permitted, so there is an urgency to work as efficiently as possible within a limited timeframe - the longest pose is twenty minutes. I have been very pleased with the results that can be realized from a very limited palette in a very short amount of time using this technique.
